Helping Families Walk Again, One Step at a Time

Updated: Jul 5

When we talk about our Food Bank Program, it’s easy to think only of rice, canned food, and daily essentials. But for many families we serve, true care goes far beyond a meal pack.

Some of our families have faced life-changing challenges, like the sudden loss of mobility when the breadwinner suffers a stroke. These moments can shake an entire household overnight.

That’s why at PKDM, our commitment is not just to provide food, but to stand by these families with practical help and encouragement when they need it most.

Extending Help Where It’s Needed Most

Three families we support faced the heartbreaking reality of their main income earner suffering a stroke. Knowing that food alone couldn’t help them recover, we stepped in to do more. We provide:

  • Physiotherapy Support: We arranged and sponsored weekly physiotherapy sessions, both with external professionals and medical volunteers, for families where treatment could still help restore mobility and independence. Sessions run once a week for 10 weeks, an hour each time, focusing on restoring strength, improving balance, and reducing fall risks.

  • Essential Supplies: We continue to supply adult diapers to make daily care more manageable and to uphold dignity for patients who are bedridden or unable to move freely.

  • Real Progress, Real Hope: One of our beneficiaries, Mr Velu, was left paralysed after a stroke in 2022. Thanks to initial sponsored physiotherapy, he is now able to sit up, take a few steps, and even climb stairs more confidently, with better balance and gait. He can now work out to do simple exercises on his own, something that was once unimaginable. We also supported his four children by placing them at Rumah Destiny

Another beneficiary, Mr Jaya, was also paralyzed by a stroke. PKDM stepped in to sponsor his initial physiotherapy, giving him the chance to sit up, regain strength, and move around with a walker. To ease the family’s stress, PKDM also covered his son’s hostel rental for a year while in college giving the household precious breathing room to focus on recovery without sacrificing their children’s education.

  • Basic Home Needs: Another beneficiary, Mr Maga, who suffered a stroke while working as a guard, we stepped in to help supply adult diapers and even arranged electrical installations when his family successfully secured a PPR flat last year.

Why This Matters

These small steps of care paid physiotherapy, adult care supplies, a safe home may seem ordinary, but they add up to hope, dignity, and the chance to rebuild. Every time a stroke patient takes a few more steps, climbs stairs with more confidence, or simply moves from a bed to a chair without fear, it’s a milestone worth celebrating. It means fewer falls, more independence, and a better quality of life for the whole family.

Your Kindness Makes This Possible

Behind every adult diaper delivered and every physio session paid for, there are volunteers, donors, and supporters who choose to walk alongside these families during their hardest seasons. Together, we’re proving that our Food Bank is more than food it’s practical compassion in action.

We Need You. Be Part of This Impact

We’re calling for medical volunteers physiotherapists, nurses, and caregivers who can donate time and expertise to reach more families in need.

We’re also looking for sponsors for essential medical supplies, from adult diapers and physio equipment to home care basics like bed rails, commodes, and walking frames.

Your support whether time, funds, or equipment keeps these families from falling through the cracks. It turns fear into relief, and isolation into hope.

Let’s stand by them, one step at a time — together.
